1987 click no start

Hello, thank you for any information you can give me. My 87 has started intermittently just clicking when I turn the key. Battery is fine and in fact if I try it a few times, after several clicks, it turns over. Admittedly no mechanic but would like to fix this myself. Solenoid or starter? If it is the solenoid, can it be tested and or replaced independent of the starter? Any insight would be much appreciated.

It sounds like the starter is just getting bound up. Ideally you would want to diagnose a bad starter by making sure you have battery voltage to the main motor post at all times and that you have battery voltage to the solenoid post while the key is in the cranking position. If you have a multimeter that measures voltage this would be a good idea. If you have both those things, its 99% of the time going to be a bad starter motor. One other test however is to have someone hold the key in the crank position while you strike the starter with a rubber mallet or the wood handle portion of a hammer. If it starts after a few strikes you can bet on the starter being bound up inside.

As far as replacement, I would just get a good new unit and be done with the whole thing.
